Mayor Helen Thomas is refuting claims by the organizers of an anti-violence concert that she strong-armed a church pastor into canceling the event.
"There is no way I would ever stop anyone from doing anything to try to stop the violence in the borough," she said Friday, after hearing accusations that she told Pastor Samuel Kinteh to cancel "State of Emergency: A Community Concert," which was to be held at his church beginning at 5 tonight.

Arab Roots, American Stories, will offer a lecture on Monday, November 9 at 7 p.m. in Beckman Hall Room 404.
She will also hold a book-signing following the lecture -- her book will be on sale at the event.
In A Country Called Amreeka, the Syrian-American Malek weaves stories of the Arab-American community (3.5 million strong) into the story of America, using lively and moving narratives of real people who have lived history all around the country.

An exceptionally courteous, kind and gentle woman, Willi Evans Wolfe was determined to live a full life and make the best of any situation.
At the age of 66, Wolfe died of cancer while surrounded by friends and family at the Charlotte County Hospital on Oct. 30.
"She was always positive," her husband Max Wolfe said.

Two community groups are teaming up to help Darby Borough turn the tide on its drug trade and rising violence.
The New Start Foundation and Artists Against Violence will host "State of Emergency: A Community Concert" on Friday, Nov. 7, from 5-10 p.m. The goal of the concert is to raise awareness of Darby's problems by promoting peer communications, according to Paythia Jenkins, chief executive officer of the New Start Foundation's Project Build Up.
